Star Wars (The Hero’s Journey)

Star Wars2

By David Johanssen

According to Joseph Campbell, the folktales, myths, and fairy tales that have been passed down from generation to generation tell a single grand story: “The Hero’s Journey.” George Lucas had already written two drafts of Star Wars when he rediscovered Campbell’s book Hero with a Thousand Faces in 1975. This blueprint for “The Hero’s Journey” gave Lucas the focus he needed to draw his sprawling imaginary universe into a single story.

Come learn the deeper meaning of the Star Wars saga as revealed by Campbell’s insights into timeless storytelling, hosted by a noted author and historian who will supply observations and commentary throughout the three original films.

Since 1988, Kathryn Gillett has studied the motifs and archetypes of “The Hero’s Journey.” She has identified 50 international novels and films sharing these same motifs and archetypes—what Gillett calls “The Ancient Bones of Story”—that seem deeply ingrained in our psyche. You’ll never see Luke (or his father) the same way again!

The Star Wars trilogy starts with Star Wars on Friday, Jul 13, at 5pm, continuing with The Empire Strikes Back on Friday, Jul 20, at 5pm and The Return of the Jedi on Friday, Jul 27, at 5pm.
