Country Concert and Art Sale For Ojalá Niños!

By Elsmarie Norby

In front of the historic chapel in the rural community of San Miguel Viejo, there will be a wonderful concert and online art sale on Sunday, July 29 at 2pm. This delightful event will benefit the free daily year-round education programs provided to all the children in this community for over nine years. We gladly welcome volunteers and visitors.

The music will be offered by the trio Anam Cara which means soul friends in Gaelic. They offer an eclectic mix of folk, blues, rock, and familiar Mexican songs with voices, guitar, and bass. Such earlier concerts have been a much-heralded Sunday afternoon experience just outside of town.

Donations are requested and gratefully accepted. There will be free bus transport provided from Calle Cardo at 1pm.

The online art sale will begin at the time of the concert, and will feature many fine works by a variety of local artists and collections that have been donated to benefit Ojala Niños.

The sale will run until Tuesday, July 31, at noon. If anyone would like to donate a work, please send a high resolution image to: Include the size, medium and a suggested price. Ezchwan is a fine local encaustic artist and teacher, whose work will also be available on the site.

Five years ago, Ojala Niños began to raise money to purchase a piece of land on which to build a community learning center, to serve children and families with much-needed services. The land is now paid off, and the board of directors is very involved with the plans for the building and the fundraising to make it a reality.

When I came here to live 11 years ago, the wish I heard most was, “We need a clinic!” This community lacks Internet, cable, land phones, clean water, a community meeting place, and a clinic. We will build the community center with a clinic and a rainwater harvesting system. This is what your support will do. Your presence at the concert and participation in the art sale will go a long way to see this important dream come true. Please mark your calendars now!

If you’re looking for another way to help, Ojala Niños is a part of the Global Giving family, a worldwide site that helps hundreds of wonderful organizations that aid our suffering world.

You may donate anytime, but on Wednesday, July 18, for one day only, Ojala Niños will receive 40 percent matching funds for any donation given on that day. The link is:

Together we can give a whole indigenous community opportunities to learn, earn, and share its wisdom.
