Mexico Aims to be Surf Capital of Latin America

Three major surf spectaculars are coming to the shores of Mexico this summer according to the Surf Open League, which organizes surf events throughout the nation. The best surfers in the world will come together at Puerto Escondido, Acapulco, and Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo during the summer season.

The first event takes place in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, which is known for its outdoor adventures. Although surf season opened there on June 1, dates for the first event, the Puerto Escondido Cup, are pending. The event will bring together the top 24 tube riders in the world, including seven from Mexico, to Zicatela Beach, known for swells of up to 75 feet.

The second event will take place in Acapulco, Guerrero, from July 20 to 22. An international qualifying event for World Surf League status, Surf Open Acapulco expects to attract more than 100 top-ranked surfers from 15 countries around the world.

The final event, scheduled from August 31 to September 2, is the Surf Open Ixtapa, which also takes place in Guerrero State.

Each event is being organized with a festival component that will include a series of activities and events. The Open Surf League says it also hopes to raise awareness through these events about responsible care of the oceans.

Paris Named World’s Best Place to Visit

Paris took the number-one spot on the US News & World Report World’s “Best Places to Visit” list. The City of Lights earned the distinction “thanks to its unforgettable character and cultural attractions,” the publication said.

For those who prefer something closer to home, Yellowstone National Park—spanning Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho—came in second. Another popular European destination, Rome, ranked third, while the once-in-a-lifetime destination of Tahiti came in fourth. London rounds out the top five.

Ponant’s New Luxury Expedition Ship

Luxury expedition cruise line Ponant’s newest ship—Le Laperouse—recently arrived in Reykjavik, Iceland, where it will depart for its maiden voyage.

The 184-passenger ship, which will be christened on July 10 in Reykjavik, is the first in Ponant’s new Explorer class. Features of this class include a reinforced hull for polar exploration, a fleet of Zodiacs for excursions, a water sports marina, an infinity pool, and the unique-in-the-industry Blue Eye Lounge—an underwater space offering ocean views and sounds via specially-developed hydrophones integrated into the ship’s keel.

All 92 of the ship’s cabins and suites will feature either a balcony or private terrace.

Ponant is a French-owned luxury cruise line that sails to expedition destinations, as well as to Europe. Le Laperouse is the company’s first of six Explorer-class ships due to launch between now and late 2020. The second, Le Champlain, will launch this October.

New TSA Rules for Powders in Carry-ons

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is implementing new rules regarding powders in carry-on bags on international flights into the United States. The new rules will take effect June 30.

The rules apply to powder-like substances in amounts of over 12 ounces, which is about the size of a standard can of soda. When they are in travelers’ carry-on bags, these powders may require secondary screening, and if the powder cannot be cleared by security officials, it will be prohibited from the cabin of the aircraft.

Powders are further defined as fine dry particles produced by the grinding, crushing, or disintegration of a solid substance, such as flour, sugar, ground coffee, spices, powdered milk, and cosmetics, although security officials will have the final say on what counts as a powder.

There are a few exceptions to the new rules: certain powders, including baby formula, medically necessary powders, and human remains, are exempt from the secondary screening. Additionally, the policy does not apply to flights departing the US or US territories, since the TSA has already implemented enhanced security procedures at those checkpoints.
