CASA helps México produce desperately needed midwives

graduacion parteria 2018

By Nadine Goodman

This past Saturday, June 23th some 350 people celebrated the graduation of the 17th generation of professional midwives from the CASA Midwife School.  It was a festive occasion and a bit somber since this is the last generation to graduate from the technical level program.

The graduates come from diverse backgrounds, but many are daughters or granddaughters of traditional midwives. Some graduates are from Dolores Hidalgo, others from Tijuana and others grew up in rural villages in Chiapas, Oaxaca, San Luis Potosi, Queretaro, among other states.

For three years the graduates have lived and studied in San Miguel over six consecutive semesters. They became intimate colleagues and friends, living in CASA´s dormitory on-campus. Now they will be distributed throughout the republic, carrying out their year-long social service in public hospitals.
