Low-Cost Carrier to Fly New York‒México City

Viva Aerobus, a low-cost carrier, is set to launch new flights between Mexico City and New York City’s JFK Airport. It will begin operating the new daily route October 18, with prices starting from US$99.

Viva Aerobus said it will offer passengers more than 132,000 seats during the first year of operation of this new route. The airline already flies to 20 destinations, two of them international: Las Vegas and now, New York City. With this new route, the airline offers a total of 92 routes to 40 destinations, seven of them international.

Over 1.5 Million Seats Added on Flights to Mexico

The Mexico Tourism Board (MTB) announced that Mexico’s global air connectivity has grown with the addition of 1.5 million seats on direct flights to Mexico in 2018. The increase in air connectivity is expected to result in nearly 30 million seats by the end of the year.

Mexico welcomed 10.6 million tourists in the first quarter of 2018, a record-breaking number representing a 12.6 percent increase compared to the same period in 2017. Tourism revenue also grew by 7.2 percent in the first quarter of 2018, reaching US$6.2 billion.

Mexico is now the sixth-most visited country in the world, with 39.3 million international visitors in 2017, of which 18.6 million traveled by air.

As part of its connectivity strategy, Mexico is aiming to strengthen its tourism source market diversification, increasing the number of tourist arrivals from China, Japan, South Korea, the Middle East, and India.

Several new routes—like Hainan Airlines’ first-ever service from Beijing to México City via Tijuana and Emirates Airlines’ service between Dubai and Mexico City via Barcelona—will make Mexico more accessible to travelers across the globe.

Cruise News

Silversea-RCL Partnership

In a recent stunning announcement, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCL), the parent of Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, and Azamara Club Cruises, said it will buy a 67 percent stake in ultra-luxury Silversea Cruises, which also operates Silversea Expeditions. The investment is a

US$1 billion transaction and is expected to take effect after regulatory approvals, likely toward the end of 2018.

Competitively speaking, Carnival Corporation has Cunard and Seabourn as its luxury and ultra-luxury brands, while Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings owns ultra-luxury Regent Seven Seas Cruises. Now RCL can similarly appeal to both the highest level of luxury customer and experiential adventurers eager for an expedition cruise.

Silversea will remain an independent company with RCL as the biggest shareholder.

AmaWaterways to Expand Wellness Program

AmaWaterways has announced a new expansion for its Wellness Program that will go fleetwide in 2019 across Southeast Asia and Europe (except for Portugal). The Wellness Program is led by a dedicated wellness host on each ship, who aims to inspire individuals to mindfully achieve their fitness goals or set new ones.

During their cruise, guests will have the opportunity to participate in group fitness classes—such as stretching, core strengthening, and resistance band training—and lectures and discussions related to holistic wellness. Additional signature classes like yoga, Pilates, and circuit training may also be offered.

Onshore, guests can take part in active excursions including guided hiking, biking, and running outings through the cities and villages showcased on each itinerary.

AmaWaterways’ Wellness Program is a recent addition to the company’s health and fitness offerings, including a fleet of complimentary bicycles onboard, a fitness room, a pool, and walking track, as well as a massage room and hydration station available 24/7.

AmaWaterways has also incorporated healthy food options into all of its menus—including accommodating gluten-free, low-sodium, and vegetarian diets.

Travel Trivia

What is the longest river in Asia?

The Pearl River, Yellow River, Mekong, or Yangtze?

The Yangtze is just under 4,000 miles long, making it the third-longest river in the world, behind the Nile and the Amazon. Located entirely in China, the river is the longest to flow entirely within one country, and its basin houses nearly one-third of the country’s huge population. Shanghai, Nanjing, and Chongqing are all on its banks. The Three Gorges Dam also spans the river, creating the world’s largest power station.
