Therapy for Brain and Body

By Christina Johnson

What soothes your heart, lowers your blood pressure, cancels out diabetes, and counteracts depression?

What allows more balance and confidence to those with Parkinson’s disease? And gives people with Down’s Syndrome a way to solidly inhabit their bodies with more grace and precision? What unites your psyche with knowledge of the body, inspires your endocrine system with endorphins, and multiplies your chances of a longer and much happier life without Alzheimer’s?

Argentine Tango

Yes, indeed; dance your way to maximum health and superior cognitive mastery within the ecstatic embrace of tango! Additionally, you may improve your memory, strengthen

core muscles, improve posture, and gain balance and coordination skills.

Dancing tango decreases cortisol levels. It relieves stress, improves sleep patterns, and gives a general sense of ease and well-being. Being hugged and cuddled significantly increases our sense of well-being by releasing the hormone oxytocin into our system. The closeness of tango and the pulse of tango music can also encourage our heartbeats to synchronize and help dissolve stress and create empathy.

In 2012, a study led by Dr Pinniger from the University of New England found that tango is as effective as medication in reducing psychological distress. Participants who suffered from depression found that the effects of tango were comparable to medication!

Dancing tango gives optimum exercise without strain, increases flexibility, reduces social anxiety, and gives the brain a good workout.

Come discover enjoyable movement through tango steps, body awareness, and core strengthening. Tango Therapy is a class designed for people who are post-surgery, who have joint or back problems, or are first-time tango dancers. Your brain will be working hard, and your body will enjoy a bit of challenge but also a lot of fun.

We are resuming class Tuesday, July 3, 10:15–11:15am at Pure Fitness Studio on Stirling Dickinson, a few doors down from Hotel Real de Minas near the end of the block. Save and prepay 375 pesos per person, or 700 pesos per couple, for five classes. Otherwise the cost is 120 per person and 180 per couple per class.

Wear comfortable clothes and leather-soled shoes.
