Art with Heart—A Special Exhibition

By Eli Hans and Joseph Bennett, photo by Eli Hans

A few months ago, as we strolled along Parque Juarez enjoying the art that several artists display on weekends, we came across some beautifully executed watercolors and met Antulio “Tulio” Velazquez, the talented young artist that created them.

Upon meeting him, we were impressed by this well-spoken and humble young man who is, at the moment, the sole provider for his family. His father, Cuauhtémoc Velázquez Luna, who is his art teacher and mentor—and a gifted artist in his own right—suffered a tragic accident ten months ago which left him incapacitated and unable to work. Tulio drives three hours to San Miguel from Irapuato every weekend to attempt to sell their works of art.

We were so taken by this young man’s poise and artistry that we felt moved to offer him support, not only to facilitate the financial needs of his family, but also as a talented artist who deserves exposure and encouragement.

We would like to invite all of you to come and meet Tulio—and his talented father—at an exhibition of their works for one night only, in our home gallery space. And, of course, if you are so moved, to purchase their beautiful, and affordable, works of art. All proceeds of the sales go directly to them. Also, one of the pieces in the show that is also featured on the cover of this week’s Que Pasa, Callejon de Pueblito, will be available for raffle at the exhibition.

His themes focus on the natural urban landscapes of San Miguel and Guanajuato and the natural landscapes surrounding them. Tulio’s watercolor technique “is at once loose and free, yet realistic and evocative. His compositions always take into account an exaltation of light, with beautiful contrasting shadows and a subtle use of color” said Jessica Antonelli, an international art instructor.

Tulio pays tribute to his beloved father Cuauhtémoc in this exhibit, suggesting we include his works as well, which are truly extraordinary watercolors. “My father has been, in my professional career, my teacher, partner, and friend, teaching me all the guidelines required to achieve a good technique in this style of painting,” says Tulio. “Many stumbles and falls have taken place during this process, and he has always been a great support in everything I have managed to do in art.”

This special evening promises to be filled with life, joy, memories, and, most importantly, beautiful watercolors full of color, shadows, light, and harmony at The Studio Space, our home gallery and art studio.

We hope you will join us and partake in this wonderful artistic, loving, and supportive endeavor. See you there!
