The Phantom Circus Show

By Paul Drouin

San Miguel de Allende has an active theater scene with local talent showcased in various venues around town. This summer season is shaping up to be an interesting one with, among others, the production at the Angela Peralta Theater of El Circo Fantasma (The Phantom Circus), a one-man performance by Christian Baumgartner.

The show combines circus arts, such as trapeze and aerial ballet, and uses theatrical techniques and mime as narrative tools to convey this charming tale.

El Circo Fantasma is the story of a circus employee whose daily work routine is one day interrupted by the discovery of a mysterious trunk. Overcome by curiosity, he opens the trunk and discovers that it contains the ghosts of several legendary circus performers. He becomes possessed by these ghosts, who make him do all manner of crazy things.

Baumgartner, a versatile actor recognized in the artistic community for his participation in a variety of stage projects such as the recent production of Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey into Night, is currently part of the cast working on a play to commemorate the anniversary of author, politician, and philosopher Ignacio Ramírez, known as [MA1] “El Nigromante.” Baumgarten’s biography is impressive and extensive, but suffice it to say that he is at once author, producer, director, and actor of El Circo Fantasma. It’s a work that reflects his interest and passion for aerial acrobatics and the theater that have followed him throughout his career since graduating from acting school in Mexico City.

Through the conscientious use of gestures, sounds, and corporal expression, El Circo Fantasma will appeal to a diverse audience of all ages and backgrounds, providing them with an enjoyable evening of magical entertainment. Baumgarten is excited and happy for the opportunity to share his creation with the public at the Ángela Peralta Theater.
