My Child, My Love: Sin Excepciones

SIN EXCEPCIONES
By David Johanssen
It takes courage for a child to say, “Mom, I’m gay,” especially in conservative Mexico. In a new play, renowned Mexican actress Laura Sotelo presents the story of how she came to accept that her child is gay. It is a personal story that she hopes will change the hearts of parents across Mexico.
Having performed on stage, in film, and on TV for over thirty years, we recently interviewed Laura about her original Spanish-language show, Sin Excepciones:
Shelter: Why did you want to bring this production to San Miguel de Allende?
Laura: San Miguel is so incredibly romantic, but there is a lack of information about sexual diversity. What do you do when your child says, “I’m gay”? Do you reject him? Do you accept him? With my play, I want to touch the hearts of parents, to help them understand and accept their gay children.
Shelter: What is the most important part of your play?
Laura: To change the minds of family and society. If after leaving the theater, a mother arrives home, hugs, asks forgiveness of her child who has been rejected for being different and says “Let’s talk,” then this story will have fulfilled its mission. Rejection and homophobia often begin in the home, [which is] supposed to be the safest place. Hopefully, the message of the play will be clear even for non-Spanish speakers.
Sin Excepciones premieres Jun 30 at Shelter Theater, tickets available at the Biblioteca tienda[MA1] Tesoros and online at sheltervg4.com.
