Fr George arrives at St Paul’s Anglican

Fr George

By Mary Jean Miller

St Paul’s Anglican Church in San Miguel de Allende welcomes the Reverend Canon George F Woodward III as our next rector, arriving July 1.

Fr George has a hearty laugh and a unique ability to reach out to a wide variety of people and their interests. He is bilingual and sensitive to broader relationships, having served 23 years in St Edmund’s Episcopal Church in San Marino, California. St Edmund’s is just outside of Los Angeles and 150 miles from the border with Mexico. His time there no doubt made him sensitive to broader relationships between countries and cultures.

Anglican communities around the world are given a special privilege: to select the parish priest who will best fit their congregation. For St Paul’s, this is a new opportunity to come together, work together, and become a more diverse parish, hoping to better realize our Christian mission in the world. After receiving 23 applications, our search committee selected Fr George as our first choice, and he has accepted that call to be our next rector.

In May, Fr George was here fine-tuning his living arrangements and organizing how he might effectively share his presence in San Miguel. He is impressed with the range of activities emanating from St Paul’s and hopes to expand our Spanish-language liturgical presence. In an interview with our senior warden, he recognized that throughout our expat community we possess a deep commitment to social outreach on many levels. He is comfortable responding to questions, enthusiastic with new information, and curious about our town. Check out his Facebook page.

While in California, Fr Woodward committed his efforts to Cristosal, a human rights organization working to advance human rights in El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua through rights-based research, learning, and programming. Two goals of the foundation are to help create safe spaces for families with young daughters and get these governments to begin to protect basic civil rights.

Canon Woodward will celebrate a love for music, adult education, pastoral care, and local and global concerns. With his impressive ability for engaging new parishioners and children, Fr George has the potential to develop a thriving modern-style parish for children and families who live in San Miguel full-time and for those who visit regularly. We invite you to visit with us, meet Fr George at our Sunday services at 9am and 10:30am beginning July 1, and see for yourself what an asset this man will prove to be in our community.
