By Cynthia Parada Camacho

Dr Diego Alberto Valdez Castillo, a native of Dolores Hidalgo and a specialist in emergency medicine, is the latest addition to UNIMED Hospital.

Valdez Castillo started working in the health care system at the age of 16 in civil protection as a volunteer in prehospital care (care given to a patient before he or she reaches the hospital, usually by paramedics).

In 2005, he graduated from Centro de Capacitación en Tecnología in the city of Guanajuato in medical emergencies (CECATEM). That same year, he began his studies in medicine at the Juarez University in Durango, where he had the opportunity to perform hospital practices in a Unidades Médicas de Alta Especialidad, a government specialty-care facility run by the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS). He completed his internship in Monterrey.

Valdez Castillo began his medical specialization in 2013, at the Hospital General Balbuena, a public facility of the Secretaria de Salud of Mexico City. This hospital has had the longest experience of all hospitals in Mexico with emergency medicine and is considered the cradle of emergency medicine nationwide and in Latin America.

After finishing his training as a specialist in 2016, he then started working at the Xoco General Hospital in Mexico City for one year, during which he started his master´s degree in health care administration at the University of Puebla. He has also been an instructor at the Mexican College of Emergency Medicine.
