A Personal Perspective on Guiding for the Patronato Pro Niños Historical Tours.

By Cheryl Young

Peggy Jones, coordinator of the PPN Historical Tours and an Architectural Tour Guide, is passionate about her work with PPN Tours. And her passion shows in her glowing 5-star TripAdvisor reviews. As a recent guest said, “If my history teachers had been half as interesting as Peggy, I would have liked history a lot more!”

In support of the upcoming Architectural Walking Tour on June 21, Peggy shares her thoughts on guiding: “The guiding experience fulfills me. It’s hard to say what is my favorite part … I love meeting new people and introducing them to our amazing city, its history, and culture. I am reminded every time I take a group out of how blessed I am to live here. I am absolutely awed by my fellow guides. They are smart, fun, caring people who commit a tremendous amount of time and effort as volunteers into providing a great tour experience for visitors.”

When asked to highlight a favorite building in a city with many wonderful buildings to choose from, Peggy says, “I know it’s corny, but my favorite building, without question, is the Parroquia. I love how it looks in the morning as I walk to town looking down on it and see straight through all the archways. I love it in the early evening when the sun shines just right on it, bringing out all new colors. I love it at night when the lights make it come alive. And I love it from the distance, where it rises up in the middle of town. Even after 12 years, I am thrilled every time I see it!”

And, finally, Peggy talks about the work of PPN: “As Walking Tour Guides, we all have the opportunity, as part of our ongoing training, to go out with the professionals in PPN’s specialized medical and dental vans to visit the isolated rural communities that they serve. It is a life-changing experience. I have a nursing background, so one of the things I have been particularly impressed with is that the vans keep going back to each village until all of the children have been served and all of the follow up care is complete. The goal is to reach every child, every year.”

On June 21, you can learn about all of the fabulous architectural styles in SMA by joining the PPN Architectural Tour. Regular Historical Tours run every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. 100 percent of the tour donations and tips go to support this important work.

For 48 years, PPN has been providing necessary medical and dental services to children in San Miguel whose families cannot afford to provide it for them. In 2017, over 12,500 children benefited from PPN services. That is more than 1,000 per month!

All tours are given in English. No reservations are required, but we may need to limit the group size. With only 5 days’ notice, we can offer private, customized tours. Contact Christina @ 415 152 7796 for information.
