The Importance of Child Development

By Rocío Bautista Espinosa

My love for education was born when I was in junior high school. By that time, I was babysitting my teacher’s kids. I soon became interested in their growth and how they were developing.

Later I got the chance to enter the Social Care Mexican Institute daycare to perform my social service, required by my school. There I learned to make healthy meals and how to educate children—and I hadn’t yet even come of age. I decided then that that was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. But I had to hold back my dream of going to college because of money issues.

I was able to eventually graduate with a career in pedagogy. Currently I’m principal of La loma de los chiquillos (“Kid’s Hill”) daycare center, better known as the CASA daycare center. We do integral work with babies and children from 43 days old up to six years old. We deal with cognitive, social, and physical aspects of the children’s development so they can progress according to their abilities. Our goal is to allow them to experience quality time; it’s not just about taking care of them, but teaching them to work on different activities based on a task schedule we planned for them.

The impact of having the children in daycare is very different from keeping them in their home: we shape in them values and discipline and give them healthy food habits, overseen by a nutritionist who monitors the children month by month.

Pedagogically, all of us teachers work based on a planned program that we apply according to the children’s ages. We encourage socialization but also autonomy, which is one of the advantages of bringing the kids to a daycare. In our institution, we have large recreation spaces for the children, where they can have time to gather and socialize with other kids. Kids in a daycare such as ours not only are affectionately cared for but also are given what they need to reach their full potential.[MA1]

[MA1]Tania, this article ended really abruptly, so I added this last sentence based on the subject of the article.
