Mayoral Candidates To Speak on Public Safety

vote

The 2018 mayoral candidates will have an opportunity to weigh in on the issue of public safety in San Miguel de Allende at a forum being sponsored by Sanmiguelenses Unidos (SMU), a community-based, all-volunteer NGO whose primary purpose and goal are to improve public safety and security for all San Miguel residents and visitors.

The following candidates have confirmed their participation:

•Señor Angel Arriaga, Independiente

• Señor José Cruz González Barrera, Verde

• Señora Ana Valeria Cláres, PRI

• Lic. Ricardo Ferro, Moreno

• Lic. Mario Hernández, SOMOS

• Prof. José Isabel Ramírez Solís, Nueva Alianza

• Señor Héctor Aurelio Robles Vásquez, PRD

• Lic. Luis Alberto Villarreal, PAN

The candidates will each give a short speech, presenting their plans for managing safety and security in San Miguel, and then answer questions from the audience. Organizers stress that this event is not a panel discussion and that it will be presented in Spanish.

This is the second such forum SMU has sponsored. The first was held in June 2015 preceding the last mayoral election and was attended by more than 150 Sanmiguelenses.

Nate Fultz, SMU secretary, said, “Sanmiguelenses Unidos is keenly aware of the complex security issues present in our city, so we see great value in organizing this public forum. It is, however, important to note that SMU is not involved in the electoral politics of San Miguel, Guanajuato, or Mexico in a partisan way and does not make political endorsements. By sponsoring this event, SMU is simply providing the community with the opportunity to hear directly from the candidates about their visions for a safer and more secure San Miguel de Allende.”

Free parking is available at the hotel.

The Sanmiguelenses Unidos mission is to keep the public updated on all important security, safety, and quality-of-life issues in the greater municipality. The organization insists on full transparency from civic leaders and government officials and is committed to sharing accurate and unbiased information about these issues with the community in order to make San Miguel a safer and better place to live and work. The information SMU shares are based on the most factual details the organization can obtain from reliable sources.

SMU acts as an advocate and facilitator for all municipality residents and visitors to ensure that complaints, including denuncias before the Ministerio Público, are brought to the attention of appropriate officials in a timely manner. The organization seeks to increase cooperation and enhance communication between the San Miguel community, the Policía Preventiva, the Ministerio Público, and all public officials responsible for the well-being of residents and visitors.
