The Guia de Conexiones, San Miguel de Allende’s bilingual directory, includes more than 3,500 San Miguel businesses in 400 classified listings. This directory, better known as “the little yellow book,” celebrated 23 years of hard work with a party in Casa de la Noche’s garden on May 22.

During this event, past editions and maps of the city produced by the Guía were on display. Afterward, organizers held a small cocktail party with beer, mezcal, and empanadas for partners, clients, and friends. They are the family that for years has been present for every edition and update of the Guia, whose newest version is now also online.
Many people in San Miguel have longstanding memories of the Guia and have used it to look up all sorts of businesses to order every service they could need—–from cakes to pizza to gasoline.

The Guia de Conexiones was born in 1995 when a San Miguel family collected the needed data to create an exclusive city telephone directory. At the time, social networks did not exist and Internet access and cell phones were scarce. But most homes had landlines. And so, after months of work, the first guide was printed in 1996 with addresses and telephone numbers of businesses, and soon everyone was looking for a copy of the Guia. Restaurants, hotels, and services were looking for ways to advertise in its business directory.

Since then, it’s been updated annually. The Guia also once had a directory with the address and telephone numbers of San Miguel’s residents. Over time, however, this data began to be confidential and private, so in more recent editions, this information has been discontinued.

Each edition of the directory requires a lot of time to produce: from day one of each new Guia’s production process, many local businesses start or end operation, so the data collected must be checked each year for accuracy. In addition to the directory, the Guia creates surveys and designs maps of the city and collect ads from their clients that will go in the commercial section.
