A Mother’s Love: Mitzy and Bailey

By Megan Gabel

One day I opened the door to the SPA “casita” that Mitzy and Bailey call home so that they could run to the back dog exercise area and play. Normally, they both zoom to the back, eager for some playtime. I turned to walk to the back with them and saw Mitzy, standing still, signaling me that something was wrong. It turns out the door to their casita had closed slightly and Bailey couldn’t get out. When I opened it more, Mitzy ran up to Bailey, her daughter, and grabbed her by the rear thigh to guide her out so they could run together to the back. It was very touching.

Mitzy and Bailey have been at the SPA since January 2015. They are devoted to each other. Mitzy, a very spry 8-1/2-year-old, looks out for Bailey, now about 4 years old. When new volunteers come to walk dogs, Mitzy and Bailey are top of the list for newcomers because they are eager to go for a walk and do well on a leash—no pulling. Both are small/medium-sized, sweet and friendly. When the mood strikes, they wrestle and play with each other, and then relax and enjoy each other’s company. We would not dream of separating them; they need to be adopted together.

You can meet Mitzy and Bailey at the SPA, Los Pinos 7, Monday–Saturday, between 11 and 2. They are delightful dogs who would make wonderful family pets. Our website has bios and photos of all our cats and dogs available for adoption (plus videos of our dogs) at (Adopt me! pages). Or call us at 152 6124 for more information.

Please donate to our Pet Food Money Bank! This is our fundraiser to raise money towards the annual cost of feeding our resident animals as they (like Mitzy and Bailey) wait to become family members. We provide food, care, and shelter for about 100 cats and dogs. We know many of you buy tickets to fundraising events. Did you know that most of the ticket cost typically goes to fund the event instead of to help the organization? Not so with our Pet Food Money Bank—100 percent of the donations received will benefit the SPA’s animals directly. Our goal is to raise 250,000 pesos (about US$14,500). Reach into your hearts and pockets and make a contribution—no amount is too little (or too big). For how to donate and more information, see, call 152 6124 or write Thank you!
