Uniting Our Communities with Bilingual Theater

By Skip Essick

San Miguel de Allende is a mecca for culture, yet at far too many cultural events here the audience is either overwhelmingly expatriate or overwhelmingly Mexican. Nowhere is the cultural divide more apparent than at the theater, where the obvious barrier is language.

In 2016, the Mexican theater professional Marcela Brondo and playwright Fredric Dannen decided to tackle the problem. Their belief that live theater, with its power and immediacy—the place, in Arthur Miller’s words, “where humanity confronts itself”—can help unite our bicultural town in a way that no other art form can rival. La Troupe was created as San Miguel’s first truly bilingual theater company. Last year’s debut production of Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night, the archetypal American play, performed in Spanish with English supertitles received overwhelming acclamation by theatergoers. “It was such a joy to see so many Mexicans at the production and to be able to invite two Mexican friends to share a theatrical experience,” one attendee wrote.

Midday Rotary is proud to present La Troupe co-founder Fredric Dannen. Mr Dannen is a journalist, author, and playwright, and a former staff writer for The New Yorker and Vanity Fair. In 1990, Hit Men, his book about the American music industry and the influence of organized crime, spent a month on The New York Times bestseller list. Billboard awarded it second place in its list of “The 100 Greatest Music Books of All Time.” Dannen, a native New Yorker, came to San Miguel in late 2002 at the urging of a friend to write a book in a tranquil environment. He never left.

The presentation is Tuesday, June 5, at noon at the Hotel Mission on Salida a Querétaro. Parking is free, and the hotel is easily accessible by bus.
