The Midwife Role

Elia Alvarado

By Elia Alvarado Chaparro

I am from an Otomí community called El Picacho, in Amealco, Querétaro. Since I was a little girl, I used to accompany my grandmother, who was a traditional midwife, running through the hills and jumping fences to attend to pregnant women.

At first she didn´t let me see what she was doing, but when I became older, I realized what amazing work she had done: giving herbal remedies and basically making women feel better with her knowledge and emotional support. I loved to see her as the leader of our community. That’s how I decided to continue with the tradition of my family.

Being a midwife is something wonderful; I love my work, and I truly love being able to take care of women. I am still excited and filled with joy every time I help a child to come into the world.

Midwives are experts in giving attention to women and their families: we take care of women from the moment their reproductive age begins, we deal with their husbands or relatives, and we also take care of their babies. The midwife imposes respect and leadership.

I am almost graduated from the Professional Midwives School of CASA and have had the experience of giving birth with traditional midwives. I am a mother of four children and all of them were born with them—two of them taken care of by my own mother, who also is a traditional midwife. My births were very beautiful and fast due to the excellent care I received.

My future plan is to perform my social service in a public hospital to gain more experience and then return to Amealco to take care of the women who need me.

Day by day I am motivated by being able to offer women different ways of giving birth, with quality and warmth, so it can become the best experience of their lives and they can be the protagonists of that special moment.
