Rita Torlen Gallery, presents Keith Keller, Isabel Badillo, and Chris Recker

By Peter Leventhal

In the Rita Torlen Gallery, in the Fábrica Aurora, there unfolds an intriguing story that is prototypical San Miguel de Allende: Isabel Badillo, the daughter of a retablo painter and artesania artist, is showing several works in the Gallery that are decidedly not in the retablo mode.

Isabel, who has been working in Rita’s studio for seven years as her assistant, started her artistic life as a student of Keith Keller. Her father gave her an eighteenth-birthday gift of a term’s work with the “beat” artist, and Keller’s influence engaged the young woman totally, so much so that Keller asked her to stay on as a permanent part of the studio. And so she did.

As Keith slowly descended into blindness, he asked Rita to take over his studio, and Isabel has continued to work with her for the past eight years.

Both Keith and Rita recognized the overwhelming passion that Isabel brought to her artistic life.  And so will you. Keller’s intrigue with the plastic potentials of oil color, combined with a narrative perspective that seeks out a vigorous reality in the life of pictorial activity, continues in Isabel’s work. Now the imagery is involved with the soothing of the spirit through the sacraments. It has been intriguing to see how the storytelling elements that produced Keith’s work and gave life to his unrestrained sensuality can now illuminate the tenderness of feeling in Isabel.

Chris Recker is a first-time exhibitor in San Miguel. He hails from New York City, Houston, California, Belize, and Hong Kong, where he exhibited and performed music.

We welcome him and his abstract works, which defy the obvious and speak for themselves.
