Three Artists: Visions of the Female

By Bonnie Griffith

This month, three longtime residents of San Miguel de Allende come together in the Besitos Garden to showcase their work in a mini-fashion walk at the Casa de la Noche that celebrates visions of the female.

Jade Diseño Mexicano is a line of clothing designed by Graciela Arroyo. She has been dedicated to promoting Mexican textile art for more than a decade. The line is committed to sustainability and local production, and the pieces are created from handmade fabrics by women artisans from the indigenous communities of Chiapas. The artisans use 100 percent natural materials such as cotton and silk. The designs feature hand embroidery and are done on a traditional backstrap loom. Arroyo, inspired by the textile richness of Mexico, seeks to transform traditional clothing—the huipil and rebozo—into contemporary clothes for women.

Lunática is Jade Muriel’s line of jewelry that references the moon—a source of myths and associated with various female divinities such as Isis and Artemis. She takes her inspiration from this lunar mother who celebrates the female spirit. The circular form of the moon is the primordial representation of the universe, of infinity, of the cycle of life, and of fertility. She uses Mexican silver and pearls from the Sea of Cortes, each piece a synthesis of the modern with the ancient.

Bonnie Griffith is a multimedia artist with years of experience in painting, photography, jewelry, sculpture, and now fabric. Her earlier designs, CollagedClothing, were made from recycled clothing bought at the Tianguis Market in 2003. Her current clothing line, Art Courant, features wearable cotton/rayon jersey dresses, skirts, and shirts in an upscale version of the T-shirt, each piece a one-of-a-kind created by the artist. Griffith was a founding member of Magenta Gallery, an artist cooperative, and has had her own gallery, Figura, for many years.

Mark your calendar for this celebration of female beauty and empowerment on Thursday, May 31st, 4–7pm, in the Besitos Garden at Casa de la Noche, Órganos 19.
