Cuba has been restricted economically for the past 50 years, but its relative isolation has left its island wildlife untouched. While much of the Caribbean has poisoned its ecological riches in pursuit of tourism and development, Cuba has remained a haven for rare and fascinating indigenous animals.

On Friday, June 1 at 5pm, Shelter Theater presents the documentary Cuba: The Accidental Eden, which studies how the lifting of the US trade embargo likely will result in changes that may Cuba’s ecology. Even though most Americans want open travel and trade policies with Cuba, it may be detrimental to Cuba’s environment. How will Cuba change as it rejoins the West? Discussion to follow.

Friday, May 25 at 5pm Shelter Theatre presents the Sundance film festival award winner for both cinematography and directing: Sin Nombre (The Nameless), the journey of a young Honduran woman hungering for a brighter future as she crosses Mexico to the United States. According to the Washington Post, “Sin Nombre is pure filmmaking: a great story told in beautiful images.”

Saturday, May 26 at 6pm: Van Morrison Live at BBC Radio Theater. Van Morrison has just released a new live concert film, an up-close and personal show described as “sublime” by Radio Times, which says, “Morrison’s rich, oaky voice brings musical healing.” With the set-list spanning his iconic catalog, including the classic hits “Brown Eyed Girl” “Wild Night,” and “Cleaning Windows,” plus a new track, “Keep Me Singing,” this live performance celebrates the Celtic soul troubadour’s 53 years as a musical innovator at the very top of his game. In Shelter’s high-definition and surround-sound version, you’ll feel immersed in the magic too!

For the entire month of May, all events at Shelter Theater will be “Pay-What-You-Can,” where you give whatever contribution you’d like to make to theater in San Miguel as your entrance fee. Come and enjoy classic films, documentaries, and concerts on screen at Shelter Theater for however much you choose to give to support the visual arts in our arts pueblo. Any contribution will, of course, also be used to help support our community events, bringing free family films and shows to our working-class neighborhood.

Shelter Theater is an easy 10-minute walk down from the Jardín! See our calendar at sheltervg4.com for dates and online tickets. Find our logo on the Que Pasa map in the upper left-hand corner.
