Danzón, Dance On!

By Leonardo Rosen

We are dancing along toward the tenth anniversary of “El Danzón y Otros Ritmos Bailables con el Club de Danzón Mercerina.” We invite you to dance along with us. El Sindicato is a wonderful host for these events, and I am deeply grateful to this great cultural center.  It has an excellent dance floor in the auditorium.

“Danzón, Dance On!”
Club de Danzón Mercerina
Sun, May 27, 4–7pm
El Sindicato, Recreo 4, Centro
152 0131 El Sindicato
154 5840 Leo “El Brujo del Danzón”

Our next event takes place on Sunday May 27 from 4–7pm, at El Sindicato, Recreo 4.  You can call us at 152 0131 (El Sindicato) or 154 5840 (Leo, “El Brujo del Danzón) for more information. We only ask for a voluntary donation of any amount to help the community cultural projects of El Sindicato. Our format is:

4–5pm: A danzón workshop at the level of the participants that day (bilingual),

5–7pm: A social dance of danzón, other Latin rhythms, and a bit of swing and rock ‘n’ roll.

For those who don’t know, danzón is “Cuba’s Gift and Mexico’s Pride,” and it came from Cuba to Mexico more than 140 years ago to become a great tradition in this country. I also dance Argentine tango, so I can tell you that it is a lot easier to get started in the danzón than the tango, at least in my opinion. In the mid-twentieth century, danzón became the partial father of mambo and the total father of the chachachá. We always say that you are the stars of this show!

¡Rico, Suave!
