Occupy SMA presents
“Mario Hernández Peña—SOMOS
and the Mayoral Election”
Mon, May 21, 1pm
Quinta Loreto Hotel
Loreto 15, Centro

Hernández is already making history by being the first independent candidate for the presidency of San Miguel—that is, not backed by a political party. He is part of a group called SOMOS, who want to put San Miguel’s destiny back into the hands of its residents and who want San Miguel to become a sustainable environment for its people and wildlife.

Hernández has been the General Director of El Charco del Ingenio since 2009. El Charco del Ingenio is a Mexican civil organization, independent and nonprofit, with 170 acres of nature preserve. It is committed to the conservation and preservation of the extraordinary natural and cultural heritage of San Miguel. His years as director have given him hands-on experience in educational programs, high desert botany, and the specific environmental problems and perspective of the high desert environment of this area. Under his leadership, El Charco has been active in educating San Miguelenses about the water crises here in our city. In addition, it has become a sacred space for the celebration and preservation of the rituals and beauty of Mexico’s indigenous cultures.

Prior to El Charco, Hernández worked for five years with the Fundación de Apoyo Infantil FAI (Foundation for the Support of Children), also known as FAI. Hernández was a product of our local schools in his primary and secondary education. He then earned university degrees in sociology and later he got a degree in underground water systems, with a master’s degree in watershed management. Recently the local Rotary Club awarded Hernández the “San Miguel de Allende Citizen of the Year” for his work.

Our program starts at 1pm at the TV room of the Quinta Loreto. There will be time for questions and answers. Our events are free and open to all. Join the discussion.
