Thank You, San Miguel

Theater brings people together—not only physically, but experientially. We have many stories of people making new friends (sometimes romantic!) with folks they meet at Shelter Theater.

Of course, the theater is an escape from reality and the stress of life. But it is also a catharsis, helping us deal with difficulties by showing characters going through similar problems and perhaps demonstrating ways to deal with them.

Shelter Theater is proud to be an active participant in San Miguel’s vibrant arts scene, so we want to thank our generous community for its support as we work to bring you ever more quality productions. Our gift to you is a month of pay-what-you-can events as we celebrate “Audience Appreciation Month.”

That’s right, for the entire month of May, all events at Shelter Theater will be “Pay-What-You-Can” where you contribute whatever you think your experience is worth. Come and enjoy classic films, documentaries, and concerts on screen at Shelter Theater for however much you choose to give to support the visual arts in San Miguel. Any contribution will, of course, also be used to support our community events, bringing free family films and shows to our working-class neighborhood.

Friday, May 11 at 5pm: Vámonos con Pancho Villa. The Fernando de Fuentes classic, Vámonos con Pancho Villa is the story of the Mexican Revolution as told by six brave peasants who join Pancho Villa’s army. The New York Times says, “This is the movie where style is at its best as everything just fits nicely with a vision of the Revolution. Vámonos con Pancho Villa was de Fuentes’s true masterpiece about the Mexican Revolution.” Viva Mexico!

Los Olvidados on Friday, May 18th at 5pm: The classic 1952 film that reinvigorated director Luis Buñuel’s career. A group of juvenile delinquents lives a violent and crime-filled life in the festering slums of Mexico City. According to the New Yorker Magazine, “It’s a masterpiece that tangles individual and social ills into a knot, which, as we’re warned in an opening voiceover, it offers no easy way to untie, rousing a sickening sense of injustice.”

Shelter Theater is an easy 10-minute walk down from the Jardin! See our calendar at sheltervg4.com for dates and online tickets. We reserve the right to refuse service due to our limited handicapped access. Write sheltervg4@gmail.com for details.
