Resident Appreciation Month

By David Johanssen

Now that the snowbirds have gone north, we would like to show our appreciation for the residents who live in San Miguel year-round and give back to the community we all love. For the month of May, all events at Shelter Theater will be ‘Pay-What-You-Can.’

Pay-What-You-Can allows patrons to purchase any seat in the house for any donation they care to make to support independent theater in our lovely hometown. Come and enjoy classic films, documentaries, and concerts on screen at Shelter Theater for however much you choose to contribute!

Saturday, May 5 at 6pm: Monterey Pop. On a beautiful June weekend in 1967, the first Monterrey International Pop Festival captured the spirit of the ’60s, featuring career-making performances by Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, Simon & Garfunkel, Jefferson Airplane and The Who. The Village Voice calls the film, “One jaw-dropping performance after another.”

Put on your bell-bottoms and come relive the “Summer of Love” on our big screen, immersed in our surround-sound stereo for the best concert experience in San Miguel!

Wednesday, May 9 at 5pm: Narco-Cultura, an explosive look at the drug cartels’ pop culture influence on both sides of the border. The documentary explores an LA narcocorrido singer dreaming of stardom and a Juarez crime-scene investigator on the front line of Mexico’s drug war. The Washington Post says, “This haunting documentary contrasts songs saluting Mexican drug lords as heroic bandits with the harrowing reality of life in murder-stained Juarez.” We will have a discussion on how to deal with this glamorization of narcos in Mexican culture after the documentary.

Friday, May 11 at 5pm: Vámonos con Pancho Villa. The Fernando de Fuentes classic, Vámonos con Pancho Villa is the story of the Mexican Revolution as told by six brave peasants who join Pancho Villa’s army. The New York Times says, “This is the movie where style is at its best as everything just fits nicely with a vision of the Revolution. Vámonos con Pancho Villa was de Fuentes’ true masterpiece about the Mexican Revolution.” Viva Mexico!

Shelter Theater is an easy 10-minute walk down from the Jardin! See our calendar at for dates and online tickets. We reserve the right to refuse service due to our limited handicapped access. Write for details.
