International Book Day

Día Internacional del Libro 2018

By Danilo Filtrof

On Monday, April 23rd, during the International Book Day, members of the civil society of San Miguel de Allende got together at the Museum Casa de Allende to acknowledge the work and legacy of Victor Sahuatoba, founder and director of FELISMA (Festival Literario y Feria del Libro de San Miguel de Allende). The purpose of FELISIMA -which celebrated its 10th edition this 2018- is to promote reading which is why it is also the Foundation Un Chorro de Literatura AC’s main project.

The event had a discussion table which was attended by guests such as Patricia Guerra Vallejo, director of the Museo Casa de Allende; Lucina Kathmann, vice president of PEN Internacional; Verónica Agundis, Federal Deputy; Tony Cohen, writer, author of “On Mexican Time”, Danilo Filtrof, visual artist and cultural promoter; and Victor Sahuatoba. They all shared important memories and cultural projects in which they participated along with Victor: the opening of a rural library, the promotion of reading to prisoners inside jails and of course the books he helped to publish. Matilde González was in charge of giving the recognition to the author and cultural promoter, remembering how they met having met him in that precinct while she was the director. It was a very emotional moment, to which Sahuatoba thanked (to) «(…) the Civil Society of San Miguel the Allende -critical, diverse, creative- an example to for the rest of the country. To accept a Recognition of this nature is an act of plural consciousness -not of personal egoism. (…) La tura es de quien la literatura! Thanks and Gifts.»

Last but not least, Victor -who is as well vice president of PEN San Miguel- read a selection of his works in poetry and narrative: “Cuadernos de San Miguel” and “La Ola”, both key moments of his work. The event finished with a toast and a busy book signing session with the author.
