First Friday—Live Begins With Meet and Greet

FIRST FRIDAY

By Mark Johaningsmeir

Join us for a brief energetic musical Shabbat Service. We honor the traditions of Judaism by using the old and familiar, as well as contemporary poetry, songs, and stories. Join in the singing, share in the readings.

We are a welcoming nondenominational eclectic Jewish congregation that celebrates the Sabbath on each First Friday of the month. This service has welcomed many since we began in January 2017. We hope to welcome anyone who wants a way to be part of a Jewish community that speaks to life today in San Miguel.

We begin our Shabbat gathering with a “meet and greet Oneg” at 5:30pm. The service itself begins at 5:45pm and concludes by 7pm (in time for other evening plans.) Services are led by Judith Jenya, a lifelong explorer of various Jewish paths and former director of a large Reform synagogue in northern California. She has led various kinds of services and participated in many around the world. Judith has been the coleader of First Friday—Live services since January 2017. In each service she gives the Drash, a short inspirational talk based on the Torah reading.

Joining her is our new musical soloist, Jordan Saturen. Jordan enjoyed playing with musicians in a monthly musical Shabbat service for over 14 years at Temple Emek Shalom in Ashland, Oregon. He sang and played clarinet, flute, piano, and percussion. He now lives in San Miguel with his wife, a native of San Miguel, and their two sons, Marcelo and Mariano (ages 11 and 7). Jordan was married under a chuppah with his parents chanting the sheva brachot in the Parroquia in the year 2000!

We look forward to you bringing your heart and mind to these gatherings. We are building a community and making a spiritual home for nondenominational Jews and those who may not have participated in other Jewish observances and traditions in San Miguel. First Friday—Live happens each first Friday of the month at the JC3 (the Jewish Community and Cultural Center), Las Moras 47, at the corner of Cinco de Mayo, in col Guadiana. Our doors are open to you!
