A Trio of Super Exhibitions

By Margaret Failoni

There is never enough of a good thing. So with this in mind, the Intersección Gallery opens several exhibitions in conjunction with the Cinco de Mayo Festivities Art Walk.

Erica Corral, an integral part of the Corral art clan, presents a group of exquisitely executed pencil drawings, portraits of the next generation and more, plus a series of hauntingly beautiful poems.

Santiago Corral: “Por la boca muere el pez.” This artist never fails to amaze. Not only one of the most complete and gifted realist painters of his generation, but this time around, he enriches the offering with sculpture. Superbly deft in portraiture and landscape painting, the artist produces unusual paintings and sculptures of food. Unlike the Flemish Masters of the past, whose painting bravura he equals, Corral does not paint the carefully posed “pretty” subject matter but instead prefers to paint the “remains of the day,” and in doing so creates his particular magic. For although the diners in his works are not seen in the picture plane, their presence is felt by the viewer as if the diners have just stepped back from the table. Beautifully painted dishes and bronze-cast spaghetti are the highlights of the show. The half-eaten fish on some of the plates suggest the title of the show, based on a play on words of a well-known Spanish metaphor.

Micro Cosmo is an exhibition where fifteen exceptional artists have been challenged to create important work in small sizes. The results are amazing.

Rodrigo de la Sierra, Andrew Fisher, Joan Hall, Ian Johnson, Alabero Lenz, Luis Luna, Alejandra Mendoza, Keith Miller, Siobhan O’Donaghue, Victor Hugo Perez, Ana Quiroz, Larimar Richards, Charles Seplowen, Mary Stuart, and Ana Thiel are the international group of artists who work and live in New York City, Mexico City, and San Miguel, and who so beautifully met the micro challenge with exquisite sculptures and paintings, each work a true treasure. All the artists are attending the opening.
