New Free Online High School Giving Out Scholarships

By Karla Ortiz

The Virtual University of Guanajuato (UVEG) and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), join forces to consolidate the B@GTO Baccalaureate project, a completely free and online baccalaureate program, which is starting off with 30 full scholarships to be distributed first come, first serve. Although Maestro Carlos Alberto Martínez, Coordinator of the North Zone UVEG, says that they will try to provide as many scholarships as possible to all those registered.

Depending on the response of the students, they could open another call for 30 more scholarships. Even high school students who are about to complete their level or adults interested in the scholarship can join the program.

The Director of Education in the Municipality, Maestra Verónica Rodríguez, mentioned that this is a great step forward in education to close gaps in the attention-deficit in the area of high schools in Guanajuato, since the state is below the national average in high school dropouts, a truly important issue in the country, as higher secondary education is compulsory for all from this year onwards.

The B@GTO Baccalaureate has an online mode, in which the program covers basic cultural needs that are indispensable. Curricular design allows for the development of skills, as it includes interactive content in which students not only work in front of the screen, but also develop interactively, increasing the pace in each module. The student will be able to develop attitudes and values, the capacity for reflection, autonomy in learning, as well as the ability to participate in group activities. They will also be assisted by tutors and teachers from UNAM. To obtain the certificate, the student must pass the 23 compulsory subjects and one optional subject included in the study program, which must be completed in a minimum of 2 years and a maximum of 5 years. The study program is designed to allow students to enter the portal at any time they can, but it is recommended that it be 4 hours per day. They can enter the portal from Monday to Sunday, from their own computer, laptop, tablet, or even a smartphone. In case of not having any device connected to the Internet, ENES UNAM opens its doors on Mesones 71 for anyone who wants to use the computer room and complete their daily study hours from 12 to 4 pm.

The call for applications began last Friday, April 20 and will end on June 3. The first preparatory course will begin on June 11, and the program will begin in September 2018. The courses are completely free of charge. The only payment would be in the case of the student repeating a course, in that situation the cost would be 300 pesos per course.

For more information or orientation, you can visit ENES UNAM’s facilities in Mesones 71 or the UVEG offices in the Av. 1ro de Mayo in the neighborhood of Palmita de Landeta.
