Buena Vista Social Club Screening at Shelter Theater

By David Johanssen

The Buena Vista Social Club was a members’ club in Havana, Cuba in the 1940s, where its dances and musical activities made it a popular location for musicians to meet and play. In the 1990s, nearly 50 years after the club was closed, it inspired a recording made with many of the veterans who had performed at the club during the height of its popularity. The album went to on to become a worldwide phenomenon, helping to reintroduce Cuba’s rich musical heritage and prerevolutionary past.

On Wednesday, April 18, at 5pm, Shelter presents the groundbreaking documentary by Ry Cooder, Buena Vista Social Club. The American rock and roller gathered together some of the greatest names in Cuban music, some in their 90s, to collaborate on the best-selling album. According to Boulder Weekly, “The music is incredible enough on its own—but the lives and the culture behind it, that’s what makes this documentary a must-see!”

Trio de Femmes’ “GirlyShow” is a cross-cultural collaboration, a unique concoction of ‘new-American butoh (Japanese theatre dancing style). storytelling, song, burlesque, and gender-clown fun that exposes and celebrates the modern woman in all her/his/their guises. GirlyShow is a sex-positive, feminine, and wholeheartedly funny performance which shines a light into the most complex depths of the human gender experience.

It’s an utterly new kind of show in San Miguel, one you won’t soon forget. Said one fan, “Full of energy! The show conveys fundamental femininity in a humorous and wild performance!” Tickets available at the Biblioteca gift shop and online at

On Friday, April 20, at 5pm, we’ll screen The Immortals. If aging and mortality can be looked upon as illnesses, might there be hope that they can be cured? An industry of age-extending pioneers is betting on it, and many wealthy consumers have volunteered their cells, DNA, or severed heads for the cause. The Immortals examines the business of eternal life and the moral and ethical implications of this controversial quest. A discussion will follow the video.
