The Russians: Who Are They and Why Should We Care?

Thoms

By Skip Essick

It seems we just can’t get away from the Russians. They’re everywhere. Russians have allegedly meddled into our elections, infiltrated and manipulated social media, and poisoned an ex-spy and his daughter in Great Britain, just to name a few. There isn’t a day that goes by when we’re not besieged with news about some kind of Russian collusion.

San Miguel de Allende resident Frank Thoms is perhaps this area’s foremost authority on Russia. As an educator and consultant, Thoms served as an American Field Service exchange teacher in schools in Leningrad in 1986 and 1987. In 1990, Thoms was extended an invitation to serve as a counselor at a summer camp in Kazakhstan attended by American, Japanese, and Soviet students. If there is anyone who can give insight and understanding of the Russian psyche, it’s Frank Thoms

You’re invited to hear Thoms at the Midday Rotary Meeting, April 10, at the Hotel Misión. He will share excerpts of his forthcoming book, A Teacher in the Rye: An American in the Last Days of the Soviet Union. Thoms will discuss his years of teaching in the former Soviet Union, the relationships he made, and the impressions he has of what has evolved from the Communist Soviet Union to Putin’s Russia.

Join us for what promises to be a compelling presentation, The Russians: Who are they and why should we care? You’ll find out the answers to these questions, and more, Tuesday, April 10, at the Midday Rotary Club at the Hotel Misión.

Rotary is where neighbors, friends, and problem-solvers share ideas, join leaders, and take action to create lasting change. For more information, contact President Fred Collins at presidentmidday@berkleyline.com and see RotarySMAMidday.org.
