The Circus Life

IMG-2

By Leonora Gabucio

When working as a circus performer you have to learn many things. One of the is how you presentyour act. When you are doing an act you don´t just “do it”, you are sharing a precious and unique gift to your audience. Yourself.

Only you can do what you do and how you do it. So you train and train your routine and tricks and how you do them. Are you going to be a glamourous circus performer? or a daredevil prince of persia? What do you want your audience to feel when they see you walk in on the circus ring?

You try to show them the very best part of you. And if something doesn´t go as planned…. you can hopefully share your sense of humor!

One day I was doing a performance,I was wearing this beautiful new costume with strips of fabric that danced around me as I worked the silks, making me look, or so I thought, magical. Until…. they got tangled.

I tried to look as graceful as one can look hanging upside down feeling humiliated, pulling at the trips of fabric trying to get free. No matter what I did I just couldn´t! A friend ran to get a ladder and scissors as I captured the undivided attention of a few hundred people. Feeling my dream turn slowly into a real life circus nightmare. And suddenly, I was free! I managed to get untangled.

I soldiered on, even though I felt humiliated, giving the best performance I could and… people loved it thankfully! I shared my flawed self with the public and they took me as I am. That is an undescribable feeling.

Once Chayanne was running around the circus ring juggling his clubs as only he can do when he slipped and fell on his face. Full-on face plant infront of, again, hundreds of people. Ofcourse he would have loved to dissapear there and then. But you know what he did? What he absolutelly had to do? He gave his best performance ever, running around the ring, jumping, juggling his heart out with an unbreaking smile. And an amazing performance that was ladies and gentlemen, for, as he presented himself to the audience at the end of his act he got a standing ovation.

And, as I always do, I end this story with an invitation. For the young and the young of heart, for anyone who wants to be thrilled and amazed. We want to share with you our hearts, our inner child through acrobatics, aerials and magic.

We are presenting a cirque- theater superheroe show with a surprise ending you won´t see coming! Tickets at “Fantazia” in Plaza el Pueblito and the theater.

We hope to see you there! And may all your days be circus days!
