Storytelling 2018

IMG_201

By Eduardo Sánchez Vázquez

Storytelling begins with a family member, who while working or resting, shares traditional cuentos (stories) with their children. To continue supporting the beautiful tradition of education through stories, the Biblioteca Pública de San Miguel de Allende, AC offers Cuenta Cuentos “Storytelling, Reading Aloud,” a free activity that will take place every Thursday in the Sala Infantil from 5–6pm. Children ages 5–12 are encouraged to attend. This spring 2018, Cuenta Cuentos is led by volunteer Alma Cervantes, who will read from the Sala Infantil’s book collection. During this time, children can enjoy being read to and can take a turn at reading aloud. Reading may seem like entertainment and enjoyment for children but parents can be assured that their children will:

  • Build motivation, curiosity, and memory
  • Develop resilience needed to cope during times of stress or anxiety
  • Learn of places and times they have never known
  • Enlarge and enhance their worlds
  • Create a positive association with books and reading

They will learn to:

  • Comprehend and name parts of the book
  • Understand how stories work
  • Recognize sounds and letters
  • Improve knowledge of a wide range of vocabulary
  • Strengthen their ability to listen

Alma Cervantes has a BA in English from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a Masters in Multimedia from California State University Eastbay. She is bilingual in English and Spanish and has over 3 years of experience working with Children K–12. As the twelfth child in a family of 15 children, Alma grew up in East Los Angeles, California and was responsible for taking care of her three younger brothers. Her family is originally from Guanajuato, Mexico.

Alma hopes to inspire the continued love of learning by children of San Miguel de Allende.
