Dear Editor:

Amongst many of the delights of visiting San Miguel over many years, the absence of the use of car hooters must rank fairly high. Even Mexico City is surprisingly quiet these days. One must be thankful for the enchanting patience of our Mexican friends towards us foreigners when many of us elderly folk take our time crossing the road. Sometimes the roads in Centro are quite crowded with tourists but drivers here are constantly civil.

Imagine my surprise this week when I was hooted at by an elderly lady in a white SUV on Calle Aldama, who even took the trouble to the slowdown and shout in a strong American accent, “Pavement!” as if I were a pet dog. One sometimes notes that foreigners, who are guests in this country, have a lot to learn from the civility of their hosts.
