Pro Musica’s 30-member Youth Chamber Orchestra will open their upcoming concert on Sunday, April 1 at the historic Bellas Artes/Centro Cultural “El Nigromante” with their brass section playing a rousing excerpt from Mussorgsky’s “Pictures from an Exhibition.”

Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky (1839 – 1881) was a Russian composer, one of a group known as “The Five.” He was an innovator of Russian music in the Romantic period and strove to achieve a uniquely Russian musical identity, often in deliberate defiance of the established conventions of Western music of the time.

Many of his works were inspired by Russian history, folklore, and national themes. Such works include the opera “Boris Godunov,” the orchestral-tone poem “Night on Bald Mountain,” and the piano suite “Pictures at an Exhibition.”

For many years, Mussorgsky’s works were interpreted in versions revised or completed by other composers. Many of his most important compositions have posthumously come into their own in their original forms, and some of the original scores are now available.

The April 1 event is part of our orchestra’s ongoing commitment to bring classical music to people of all ages in a beautiful setting. Our last concert was attended by over 300 music lovers, including families who brought their children along. These recitals are becoming a wonderful way to begin a leisurely Sunday afternoon!

On April 1, the ensemble will perform new additions to its repertoire, such as Franz Joseph Haydn’s Symphony #101 in D major. The dedication and pride of the young musicians is demonstrated by their commitment of up to three hours of travel by bus from their homes to rehearsals each Sunday. Their talents are being supported not only by Pro Musica members but also by donations that we received from as far away as Nashville, TN and two major, ongoing contributors in San Miguel de Allende.

Despite this generosity, the orchestra still needs donations and gifts of instruments to fund rehearsals and to keep pace as new players are added to the orchestra. We invite all those interested to become Friends of the Orchestra, however large or small your contribution, and whether by way of money or instruments.

The orchestra will be performing a “Music for Everyone” series of twelve concerts on the first Sunday of each month for the remainder of 2018. There is no charge, but donations are welcome. Bellas Artes organizers expect that these concerts will grow in popularity as they become part of year-round musical offerings to the general public.

This special Pro Musica Youth Chamber Orchestra event on Sunday, April 1 will showcase some of Mexico’s finest young talents! Come one, come all, bring the family and show your support!
