The SPA Needs You!

By Jayn Corral

The SPA needs you, your neighbors, your friends, and families to foster, volunteer, educate, and donate.

Did you know the SPA has a foster program? We need foster families to care for cats, kittens, puppies, and dogs who are ill or too young (like Sami and Ellie) to be up for adoption. Fostering is a short-term commitment, generally a few days or weeks. You provide the love and attention. The SPA will provide the food, supplies, and medical care. Fostering animals can be especially rewarding for those who, for whatever reason, cannot adopt their own pets.

If fostering is not your cup of tea, what about becoming a volunteer? Volunteer hours are Monday through Saturday from 11am–2pm, Los Pinos 7, 152 6124. You can come as often as you want and stay as long as you want during that time. No commitment required, and it does not matter if you are in San Miguel for one week or a permanent resident. While at the SPA, you can play with kittens or puppies, spend time with the adult cats, or take dogs for walks.

We join with others to educate the community about taking care of family pets and taking them to the vet for routine checkups and vaccinations and when problems arise. We explain about the importance of sterilization to reduce the number of stray and homeless animals. We offer various packages to entice people to maintain their pet’s health by providing some services at a reduced cost. For example, the SPA’s dental cleaning special for cats and dogs has been extended through March with 20 percent off the normal price of 700–1,000 pesos (includes anesthetic and professional cleaning with ultrasonic scaler/polisher). A dental cleaning is not purely cosmetic. It improves your pet’s dental health (by removing plaque and tartar) and overall health, quality of life, and general well-being. Our vet, Dr Adriana Rivera, who has our well-equipped clinic at her disposal, always answers questions and provides guidance to pet owners.

Did you know that the SPA needs not only monetary donations, but there are many other ways you can donate? You can help by giving such things as plastic bags, old towels, cleaning supplies, paper products, or office supplies. Even unused clothing can be turned into items of value to raise money for the animals. Ask us what we need!
