Kabarett Beyond Borders

Frans Bloem1

By David Johanssen

The guilty pleasure you’ve been waiting for is finally back in San Miguel de Allende as Frans Bloem, award-winning cabaret artist from Europe and New York, returns to Shelter Theater with his new and naughty show “Kabarett Beyond Borders.” This season, Frans is accompanied by renowned musical director Uriel Orozco and surprise guest artist “Maxim,” whom you’ll have to see to believe!

Singing in five languages across 52 countries, from Paris to Shanghai, Frans is famed for his unrivaled interpretation of chansonnier Charles Aznavour, who personally authorized him to sing his classics. Winner of the 2002 “New York Bistro Award” for outstanding cabaret vocalist, Cabaret Scenes says of the ever-popular Dutchman, “A riveting show with a passion that binds the audience to him! Frans lets the songs communicate for themselves—and they do, with power and pleasure.”

Please join us for an unforgettable evening of authentic European ‘kabarett!”

Coming to Shelter Mar 30 and 31, Readers Theater presents a live performance of “Ripcord,” the hilarious story of two widows determined to compete for the title of queen of their retirement home with, as the New York Times tells it, “a series of increasingly elaborate practical jokes, some of which verge on the downright sadistic.” Featuring the talents of many local actors as well as others from the New York area, the show is one hoot you won’t want to miss!

Shelter is the home of San Miguel’s “Open Mic” every Tuesday at 7:30pm. Take a chance for your ten minutes of fame on our warm and welcoming stage! Regulars call it the “Cheers Bar” of San Miguel. So get up and strut your stuff: music, dance, acting, comedy—you can do (almost!) anything you like—or just sit back and enjoy the fun. The cost is 70 pesos for audience members and 50 pesos for performers.

So, where the heck is Shelter Theater? Nearby, an easy 10-minute walk from the Jardín! Google us or find our logo on the Que Pasa map in the upper left-hand corner. See our calendar at sheltervg4.com for dates and online tickets. Please note: prepaid tickets are released at showtime with no refund.
