Guitarrist Alfredo Muro Gives Libros Para Todos Benefit

Dui Apaixonado 1

By Lynn Darroch

It’s been a long and winding road for guitarist Alfredo Muro. Thirty years ago, he left his native Peru and his profession as an attorney to join his sister in Oregon and dedicate his life to music. Since then, Muro has lived in five cities and carried his guitar all over the world.

The road has been good to him: His latest album, Carinhoso, is his eighth; he has appeared at international festivals and given concerts in Europe, South and Central America, Taiwan, and all over the US, including the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Last year, he was honored by the International Society of Artists, Poets, and Musicians in Peru with its highest award. And he’s just returned from a tour of Argentina and Chile.

Being on the road so much has made Muro appreciate home all the more. So now that he’s back in Guanajuato City, Muro is looking forward to supporting his community with a benefit concert for Libros para Todos (Books for Everyone) on Saturday, March 17, 6:30pm, at Bellas Artes in San Miguel de Allende.

The first half of the evening will feature Muro playing original compositions solo. He will also pay tribute to modern tango master Astor Piazzolla. In the second half, Muro’s group, Duo Apaixonado, featuring Colorado cellist Jim Bailey and Mexican percussionist Víctor Monterrubio, will play choros, Afro-sambas, Peruvian waltzes, and other Afro-Peruvian music. The program also includes Muro’s Bach visits Brazil suite, a clever cultural fusion of Baroque and Brazilian styles. After all, it’s cultural fusion that has made Alfredo Muro an internationally-known artist.

Cellist James Bailey grew up in the world of jazz (saxophone) before gravitating to the cello and classical music. He has cello degrees from the University of Colorado (masters) and the University of Kansas (doctorate). He has been both a cello professor and conductor during his years as a classical performer and teacher. Eventually, his love of world music led him to a friendship with guitarist Alfredo Muro—and they formed a duo dedicated to Latin music of several countries.

Libros para Todos is a San Miguel de Allende nonprofit that seeks to inspire children in Mexico to read more, particularly those in rural communities where access to books is limited. It began in 2013 with book distribution to rural schools, and has expanded to include workshops for teachers.
