Ser Mujer and the Center for Global Justice are bringing Guatemalan Congresswoman and activist Sandra Moran to the café at El Sindicato for a rare conversation here in San Miguel de Allende.

First elected in 2015, Moran is the first LGBT person ever elected to the national legislature in Guatemala. She previously lived in exile in MexicoNicaragua, and Canada between 1981 and 1994.

At this event, on Saturday, March 24, at 1pm in El Sindicato’s café, Moran will speak on the state of politics in Guatemala today.

Moran is a member of the Nobel Women’s Initiative, an elected member of the Guatemalan Congress for the Convergence Party, and a tireless defender of women’s rights. A longtime feminist activist and artist, she joined Guatemala’s human rights movement in high school when she was just 14 years old and was active in music, playing in the band Kin Lalat in the 1980s. She also was the organizer of Guatemala’s first lesbian group in 1995 and its first LGBT pride event in 1998.

Of all the issues she has taken up, the one closest to her heart is ending the silence surrounding violence against women. Guatemala has the third highest femicide rate in the world. In a society that still regards violence against the LGBT community as a legitimate punishment, Moran stands out as a tireless defender of LGBT, Indigenous, and Women’s Rights. Among the many issues that Moran addresses is the forced marriage of girls as young as 11 years old who become pregnant after being raped and then are forced to marry the rapist.

There is no charge for this event and everyone is welcome. For more information, go to sermujersma.com
