Give Your Emotions a Little Adrenaline

By Karla Ortiz

It’s true that adrenaline and fast-paced sports are not usually what people think of when they think of San Miguel de Allende. But believe it or not, MH Racing, a company just 15 minutes from downtown, manufactures racing cars for some of the world’s most famous drivers, specializing in reinforcement and customization of race cars. They work both with new cars and with the bare skeletons of cars from the ground up, building and outfitting them with high-performance parts.

The company gets its name from co-owners Mats Hammarlund and Eva Hellstrom, who arrived in Mexico 14 years ago to compete in the Carrera Panamericana but then decided to dedicate themselves to what they really love: creating and designing racing cars. They have been in business ever since.

Their first build was a replica of the famous LT Special—a Mexican-built racing car created in 1955 to race in that year’s Carrera Panamericana. From there, Hammarlund and Hellestrom’s business has done better and better. Today, they manufacture and improve cars competing in the World Rally Championship, for example. This year, two of their cars will be in the competition.

From Canada all the way down to Brazil, MH Racing is the only company certified to build professional roll cages (the tubed structure inside a racing car that protects the body of the car and the driver). They have customers from all over the world, including Finland, England, Spain, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Canada. Their cars have won awards for famous race car drivers such as Memo Rojas, Michel Jourdain, and Formula 1 champion Érik Comas.

Their cars have been at some of the greatest car racing events around the world, in Panamá, Costa Rica, Finland, Sweden, Mexico, Jamaica, to name just some. They are proud to say that most of their building team is made up of Mexicans whom they have helped follow their dreams and given them the opportunity to grow professionally. Two examples of which they are especially proud are Gustavo Sánchez, who now works European rallies, and Jesús Espinoza, who began as a painting assistant and now works in the pits of the World Rally Championship.

In the world of car racing, there are three important events in México: Chihuahua Express, La Carrera Panamericana, and World Rally Championship, which is currently taking place in nearby León on March 8–11. MH Racing always attends these events.

“It’s really worth going there,” Hellstrom said. “It’s a different experience than San Miguel, and it only costs the transportation to León and the entrance fee of 40 pesos. It’s a lot of fun, and, for sure, you will have a great time,” she said.
