Galería San Francisco Exhibits Karen Lee Dunn and Susan Fiori

Odin & The Ravens

By Susan Santiago

When Susan Fiori arrived in San Miguel de Allende three years ago, she was working solely in metal. She has presented her intricate and imaginative mixed metalwork, depicting iconic imagery ranging from folklore, mythology, psychology, and eastern spirituality to fantasies and dreams, in small handmade boxes.

Recently Fiori has discovered clay sculpture and has been using her extensive experience with metal to enhance her newly realized love affair with clay. “My work is growing both figuratively and literally. You might say I am ‘breaking out of the box’!”

Her presentation of new pieces at Galería San Francisco is a major departure from her previous work but contains the same whimsical qualities and thoughtful depth.

For Karen Lee Dunn, San Miguel is a constant source of inspiration and discovery. After ten years of living in and experiencing this town, she is often struck by a familiar scene that has been transformed by a singular effect of light and shadow, and she is compelled to paint it.

The individuality and creativity present in every structure invites her to study each one carefully, continuously intrigued by what inspired the architect or designer. She wants to get it all down on the canvas, capturing the light and the magic that is San Miguel—the ochres, the burnt reds and terra-cottas, the perfect blue skies and majestic cloud formations, and the peace in the Jardín on a Monday morning.  The joy, laughter, and friendliness of both natives and visitors are all captivating scenes that she never tires of attempting to replicate and share.

Her latest collection is yet another phase of her love affair with the streets of San Miguel, depicting daily life as it happens in town, on the way to the corner store or to Centro, going marketing, seeing friends, or sweeping the streets, in an attempt to connect with other lovers of San Miguel.

Both artists will premiere their work on March 9, 5–7pm, at Galería San Francisco, San Francisco 1, Second Floor.
