Concerts this week

Zoe Lewis

By David Johanssen

San Miguel favorite Zoe Lewis performs at Shelter next weekend for two shows only—Friday and Saturday, March 9 and 10 at 7pm. Her style ranges from vintage jazz, gypsy swing, Latin grooves, international folk, and funk originals on everything from piano to the spoons—yes, really!

Winning prizes at the Rocky Mountain, Kerrville, and the Falconridge folk festivals, Zoe is in high demand, touring with Judy Collins, the Indigo Girls, Richie Havens, and even opening for Pat Benetar on the ukulele! This is a high-energy, full-of-heart show that harkens back to the vaudeville era. “Probably the most charismatic performance I’ve ever seen,” says ACCESS LINE, IA. Tickets available at Biblioteca and online at www.sheltervg4.com.

On March 14 at 7pm, “Paul Segal Blues, More or Less” comes to Shelter. Segal, who hails from San Francisco, is a veteran guitarist and vocalist for numerous rock, blues, soul, and funk bands there. Heavily influenced by blues greats like B.B. King, Eric Clapton, James Taylor, Steven Stills, and Duane Allman, Paul relocated to Provence, France in 2014, where he performs regularly with his duo, Bluesville. He now spends winters here in San Miguel. If you love blues with a French twist, you won’t want to miss this one!

Frans Bloem is an award-winning cabaret artist from Holland and New York who returns to San Miguel to Shelter Theater for four shows: March 16, 17, 23, and 24. A New York award-winning cabaret performer and recording artist, Bloem returns to Shelter with his LGBT benefit show “Kabarett Beyond Borders.” Singing in five languages across 52 countries from Paris to Shanghai, Bloem is famed for his unrivaled interpretation of chansonnier Charles Aznavour, who personally authorized him to sing his classics.

Cabaret Scene writes of Bloem, “…a riveting show with a passion that binds the audience to him.”
