Art of the Pop-Up: John Hillmer at the Bordello

Peripatetic artist John Hillmer returns to the Bordello Gallery’s lovely courtyard on Órganos in Centro this Saturday and Sunday.

He is joined again by a new cast of characters, images, and ideas. His paintings are a mix of music, myth, and Mexican dance and delve into a curious visual dialogue. Here are a few written responses from recent showgoers:

• “Your art is like dreaming—half way between asleep and awake.”

• “The work is both really joyful and quite poetic.”

• “This art inspires me to go have a margarita.”

Hillmer’s work has accompanied artists like Ray Charles, Keb’ Mo’, Taj Mahal, and Maya Angelou as stage backdrops. His art has also helped to celebrate more than 50 music, community, and literary events across North America, including the Northwest Folklife Festival in Seattle.

“Chivos y Changos” (goats and monkeys) is this show’s working title, since these characters regularly figure into Hillmer’s compositions. Also making appearances will be soul fish, spirit birds, jackrabbits, and other animals.

Hillmer has lived on and off in San Miguel for many years. Today his playful work pops up in the form of small, affordable prints and larger originals. Come and be a part of Mexico’s numinous courtyard culture. See you there!
