The PPN “Slow Walk Tour” Is Mom-Approved!

By Cheryl Young

A couple of years ago, my mother went through an operation not uncommon for people their late 70s—knee replacement surgery. To be honest, it’s still not quite right, and when she and my dad come to visit us, she finds that getting around San Miguel de Allende’s hills and cobblestones can be a challenge. And for a woman who is as lively and curious as my mother, that is a real problem. Who wants to stay at home when there is so much to learn and see in San Miguel?

So she was thrilled when I told her that the Patronato Pro Niños had introduced a tour specially designed for people like her—those who need a little extra time to get around.

How does it differ from the regular tour? Our special “Slow Walk” tour starts from the Jardin, just like the Regular Classic tour. Rather than leaving the park for the majority of the tour, here we focus our time on the Jardín. Your tour guide will take you around the park at a leisurely pace, stopping at points of interest which also have seating. Of course, there will be an excursion into our famous Parroquia and the Canal Mansion. The guide will use photographs to tell stories about the sites that are not in the immediate area. The Slow Walk tour covers the same 500 years of interesting rich history as the classic historical tour, so bring a friend who may not need the extra time but wants the experience.

For 48 years, Patronato Pro Niños has been providing necessary medical and dental services, and now psychological care, to children in San Miguel whose families cannot afford to provide it for them. The focus of the fundraising activity for the guides is the mobile operation—the service range extends out of San Miguel to the small rural hamlets that surround the city. The customized dental and medical vans leave the offices early every Monday through Friday and keep returning to the same village until all of the children have been attended to by a doctor or dentist. In 2017, over 12,500 children benefited from PPN services—more than 1,000 per month!

Like the classic historical tours which run from the Jardín every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, the “Slow Walk” tour starts at 10am. It will run about two hours. Please assemble in front of the Parroquia at 9:45am. We do not take reservations, but we may need to limit the size of the groups. Tours are given in English. Donations are 300 pesos per person, including for the “Slow Walk” tour. 100 percent of the tour donations and tips go to support the important work of Patronato Pro Niños.

With five days’ notice, we can offer private customized tours. Contact Christina at 415 152 7796 for information and pricing. The website is
