Music for Everyone

Chamber Orchestra Rehearsal 4 Sept

By Tim Hazell

Pro Musica’s thirty-member Youth Chamber Orchestra will perform on the historic Bellas Artes’/Centro Cultural “El Nigromante” patio on March 4. The event is part of their ongoing commitment to bring classical music to people of all ages in a beautiful setting. The orchestra’s last concert was attended by over three hundred music lovers, including families who brought children along.

This special Pro Musica Youth Chamber Orchestra event will showcase some of Mexico’s finest young talents. The ensemble has been busy rehearsing new additions to its repertoire, such as Franz Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 101 in D major. Haydn brought fresh innovations to his music, such as the (then new) clarinet in this work, the ninth of his series of twelve London symphonies. This piece is popularly known as “the Clock” and opens with bassoons playing staccato and second violins and cellos and double basses playing pizzicato in order to create the characteristic ticking effect which gave rise to this symphony’s nickname.

The dedication and pride of the young musicians in the Youth Chamber Orchestra are demonstrated by their commitment to as much as three hours of bus travel from their homes to rehearsals each Sunday. Their talents are supported not only by Pro Musica members but also by donations that Pro Musica has received from as far away as Nashville, Tennessee.

Despite this generosity, the orchestra still needs donations and gifts of instruments to fund rehearsals and to keep pace as new players are added. We invite all those interested to become “Friends of the Orchestra,” however large or small your contribution and whether by way of money or instruments. One can also attend a Sunday rehearsal on the Bellas Artes second floor, an ideal opportunity to watch and hear the musicians “up close and personal.” Contact Program Director and Youth Orchestra Conductor Tim Hazell for further details at: timhazell123@yahoo.com.

This year, the Youth Chamber Orchestra will be performing a Music For Everyone series of twelve concerts, on the first Sunday of each month, for the remainder of 2018, joined by Guanajuato Symphony bassoonist and orchestra member Alan Monahan. There is no charge, but donations are welcome. Bellas Artes organizers expect that these concerts will grow in popularity as they become part of year-round musical offerings to the general public!
