Award-Winning Film Shines Light on Children Caught in Warzones

By Gary Davidson

On March 3, the Latin American Relief Fund (LARF) will present a film to benefit the Refugee Project. The award-winning film, Innocent Voices (Voces Inocentes) will be screened at Bellas Artes in the auditorium from 5–7pm. After the film, the audience will have the opportunity to ask questions from both the screenwriter, Oscar Torres and director, Luis Mandoki.

Innocent Voices was the winner of the Berlin International Film Festival’s Best Picture award in 2005. A true story, the film tells of Oscar’s childhood in the midst of El Salvador’s civil war when young boys at the age of twelve were forcefully recruited as child soldiers. The film addresses lives of children in the midst of conflict. When it was presented by UNICEF in 2005, the organization’s executive director said to the audience of diplomats, human rights workers, cast members, and crew, “You are about to see a powerful film about war seen through the eyes of a child. Children in conflict situations, child soldiers and exploited children are robbed of their dignity and their childhoods. We applaud the director, Luis Mandoki, for shining a light on the plight of children during wartime.”

LARF is trying to shed light on the plight of young people and families fleeing the violence of the gang drug wars in Central America today, where murders of young people are committed daily with impunity. At the same time, our mission is to give them some relief by supporting a safe house where they can stop, call their families, get a few nights’ rest, eat, and get some medical and psychological help. LARF’s funds go to pay the rent at the ABBA safe house in Celaya, Mexico. Sometimes LARF is called upon to pay utilities and offer material aid like clothing and food, a way to bring a small amount of relief to those without a country, far from their homes, and not sure where and when they will reach safety.
