Holbox: New Magic Town

A new Pueblo Magico designation has gone to the island of Holbox. The honor recognizes towns deemed to provide visitors a “magical” experience in terms of beauty, cultural riches, and traditions. The long, narrow island (pronounced hole-bosh) on the north coast of the Yucatan certainly has all that.

And there is a new hotel there, Villas HM Palapas del Mar. The beachfront property, a 15-minute walk from the Main Square, offers 52 rooms with balconies or patios, two outdoor pools, a restaurant, two bars, and free buffet breakfast daily.

The small island has a very fragile environment. There are no paved roads, and you must use golf carts or bikes to get around. Kids love it, especially during whale, shark, or turtle seasons. Holbox also has incredible bioluminescent beaches in the summer and in January.

Truck Driver Plows into Nazca Lines

Peru’s world-renowned Nazca Lines were recently damaged when a rig recently crashed into the ancient site. The driver was arrested after he allegedly ignored warning signage and drove over a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Authorities found deep tire marks across an area of 104 by 328 feet on the site’s grounds and damage to three geoglyphs.

UNESCO has called the Lines and Geoglyphs of Nazca and Pampas de Jumana World Heritage Site one of “archeology’s greatest enigmas.” They are nearly 250 miles south of Lima and cover about 450 square kilometers.

The site is around 2,000 years old. Its geoglyphs and lines date back to 500 BC through AD 500 and represent animals, plant life, and other extraordinary figures. Some are long—several kilometers—and form shapes. The designs are believed to have had ritual astronomical functions.

Authorities said they are planning to increase surveillance in the archeological site to avoid similar incidents despite the logistical challenges.
