The Cast of Kiss Tells All

Kiss Promo1

By David Johanssen

Although acclaimed Argentinean novelist/playwright Manuel Puig wrote Kiss of the Spider Woman 40 years ago, the multilayered, intensely compelling tale of love, betrayal, and intrigue remains timeless. Now Shelter Theater is proud to host this important story as Caja Negra presents the original stage play in English, from February 22 to March 4. Advance tickets are available at Tesoros, in the Biblioteca, and online at www.sheltervg4.com.

We recently had a chance to interview the cast of Kiss of the Spider Woman:

Shelter: Alan, as the producer/director, why did you choose this play for San Miguel audiences?

Alan Jordan: I think it’s important in Mexico to celebrate Latin American literature and Latin American actors. These are professional actors who are very talented and bilingual. This is a challenging piece of work seldom presented in its original form and in English.

Shelter: How did such a daring play get written 40 years ago?

Alan Jordan: Manuel Puig wrote from the heart. He was ostracized and bullied for being gay. I think this was his catharsis, a way of dealing with his pain.

Shelter: Christian, what is the biggest challenge with this play?

Christian Baumgartner: Well, the play is in English, but I have always wanted to do it. Working with Alan and Rodrigo was just too great an opportunity to pass up.

Shelter: Rodrigo, how do you feel about doing your first nude scene onstage?

Rodrigo Demian: I’m pretty relaxed about it. There’s nothing gratuitous about it. The nudity is totally justified in the script as an important part of the story.
