Film Benefit to Help Refugees and Deportees

By Sher Davidson

I am thrilled to announce the first San Miguel de Allende benefit for the Refugee Relief Project under the auspices of the Latin American Relief Fund. We will be presenting the award-winning film Innocent Voices (Voces Inocentes).

Innocent Voices was the winner of the Berlin Film Festival’s Best Picture award. It was the first film to be screened at the United Nations, and it received UNICEF’s Humanitarian Film of the Year award. It is the true story of Oscar Torres’s childhood in El Salvador in a time of civil unrest when children were used as human shields.

“I want the viewers to really feel the truths. Despite the atrocities, the one thing that didn’t get broken was the spirit. There is always hope.” Torres said.

“People often realize through watching this film that their tragedies are not that tragic. It is a powerful tool to sensitize individuals to the profound suffering of others. Innocent Voices is used in major high schools and universities across the country: Harvard, Yale, Georgetown, University of Texas, Northwestern, and UC Berkeley, to name a few. It is an educational tool and, at the end of the day, it is an inspirational film.”

After the movie, screenwriter Oscar Torres will speak and then answer questions along with the director of the film, Luis Mandoki. Your donation of 300 pesos will mean a lot to those suffering now from the crisis of violence in the northern triangle of Central America. Oscar’s story connects us to the story of the many people fleeing violence and takeover by the gangs (maras) of his country today.

Following this event, we are hosting a cocktail party with wine and botanas next door in the beautiful patio of the Sautto Hotel, catered by Bacco restaurant. Tickets for that are limited to 50, so purchase them early to have a chance to meet and talk with the screenwriter, director, and with Latin American Relief board members. Your donations will continue to help the Refugee Relief project and aid the ABBA safe house and all the migrantes who stop there on their perilous journeys, including recent deportees from the US. (See Parts I and II of this series in the last two weeks of Atención).

Following the film, there will be a brief intermission before the discussion.

Tickets are available at Solutions at Recreo 11, Tesoros at the Biblioteca, and at Via Organica at Margarito Ledesma 2. For more information, please contact or check out our website:
