SOME Continues to Feed the Body and the Spirit

By Ron Felton

In 1989, two passionate volunteers, Joe and Antoinette Lim, identified a need in this community and set out to meet it; their goal was to provide a healthy meal for elderly citizens.

The idea came from Antoinette, who began visiting the elderly and distributing food in her native Philippines when she was very young. Since its founding here in San Miguel de Allende, the So Others May Eat (SOME) program, with the help of many volunteers, has served hundreds of thousands of meals to poor seniors in the courtyard of the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel.

Antoinette Lim passed away in 2016, but every Wednesday SOME continues to serve the needy who are in the tercera edad (old age). This is due to the commitment of Antoinette’s daughter, Grace Lim, a physician who moved to San Miguel from Mexico City with her husband when her mother became ill. Grace stayed here after her mother’s passing to make sure that SOME continued, and she has expanded the program to include geriatric health talks to inform the elderly on issues that would concern them most.

Join us Tuesday, February 20, to meet Dr Lim and hear about a program that has changed lives.

Rotary is where neighbors, friends, and problemsolvers share ideas, join leaders, and take action to create lasting change. For more information, contact President Fred Collins at presidentmidday@berkleyline.com.
